Local Heroes of the Storm teams and fans were out on force on Sunday when the first Australian and New Zealand Season Two qualifier tournament got under way.
Fifteen teams from around the region signed up to compete in the double elimination tournament, with the top two placing teams securing a spot in the ANZ finals, happening on Sunday 14 May.
Tournament favourites, Negative Synergy, were the first team to qualify after a flawless run through the upper bracket saw them win every single set 2-0.
Finishing up in second was a new team consisting of scene veterans, Linda’s Little Angels. The team won all of their matches convincingly, and only dropped down into the lower bracket after coming against Negative Synergy in the upper bracket final.
Finishing in third place was Fusion, who lost to Linda’s Little Angels in the lower bracket final after just one game. As per ESL rules, all matches played in the lower bracket are best-of-one — including the lower bracket final that determines who will be the second team to qualify.
Over 150 people tuned in to watch the qualifier live, and casters Disconcur, HappyRage, Skimmy, Starving and GLPhoenix brought the entertainment throughout the day. In fact, Negative Synergy and Linda’s Little Angels were not the only winners, with plenty of viewers walking away with free skins and hero codes — including the new Azmodunk skin — thanks to Blizzard ANZ.
For those who didn’t win during this tournament, there is still another chance to lock in one of the remaining two spots in the Season Two final. Sign ups are now open for the second qualifier that scheduled to take place on Sunday, 01 May.
The ANZ Season Two finals has a prize pool of US$20,000, with the winner then moving on to represent our region in DreamHack Summer Championships in Jönköping, Sweden, where qualifying teams will compete for a share of the US$500,000 prize pool.
